Lecture to Celebrate Chinese New Year: the life of William Macao
Friday 16 February 2018. 6pm - 7pm, Drinks Reception 7pm - 8pm
St Cuthbert's Church, 5 Lothian Road, Edinburgh
Edinburgh World Heritage is delighted to mark the 2018 Chinese New Year with a special lecture by local historian Barclay Price.
Barclay will unveil his fascinating new research into the life of William Macao (1753 – 1831), the 'world’s first Chinese Scotsman'. He will describe William Macao’s journey from China to the Black Isle, and then to Edinburgh where he lived for over 50 years, rising to become a Senior Accountant at the Board of Excise.
The lecture will shed light on life, trade, and politics in Edinburgh at the turn of the nineteenth century as well as the intriguing twists and turns of Macao’s path to Scottish citizenship. Fittingly, the event will take place at St Cuthbert’s where William Macao is buried.
The lecture will be followed by a drinks reception to celebrate Chinese New Year.
