Welcome to the Scotland China association

SCA Events

We hold monthly events, mostly in the form of talks on China-related topics, from September to June. The usual time and venue are 6:30 for 7:00 pm at the Quaker Meeting House, 7 Victoria Terrace, Edinburgh, EH1 2JL. Talks can usually be attended either in person or online. They are free to attend, and everyone is welcome. A £1 donation is requested for Chinese tea & biscuits served from 6:30pm.

Tuesday, 8 December – Our Convener, Valerie Pellatt, will speak to us about Robert Louis Stevenson and the Chinese.

Tuesday, 10 November – Whose Cup of Tea? Women and the Making of Chinese Tea Culture, by Xu Yujia. What makes a cup of tea British or Chinese, and whose work gives it that identity? Beginning with familiar tea habits and the connected histories of Britain and China, Yujia Xu takes us into the lives of women working in Chinese tea. Drawing on her doctoral research, personal experience and the exhibition WOMANLY WORK 女(糹)工, she explores how gender and ethnicity shape whose skills are valued and whose stories are told. Through photographs and stories, the talk invites us to reconsider the people and histories within an everyday cup.

Monday, 12 October 2026 – Finn O’Hare will speak on “Passing Tones”.

In this talk, Finn will share the work from his month-long artist residency at Organhaus Art Space in Chongqing. He will discuss his time living in the city and how its urban environment inspired his project. The resulting exhibition, Passing Tones, was a multi-channel sound installation built from field recordings gathered across Chongqing. He will talk about the concepts behind the work, the recording process – which included a specific focus on the city’s bridges – and how this material was brought together and exhibited.
