SCA Events - Edinburgh
The 2015-2016 programme for meetings of the Edinburgh Branch of the SCA has now been confirmed and is given below. All SCA members and friends are very welcome, and we look forward to seeing you.
Events usually take place on the second Tuesday of each month, unless otherwise stated, at The Meeting House, 7 Victoria Terrace, Edinburgh EH1 2JL. Tea & biscuits will be served from 7pm (a voluntary donation is requested) and the talk will begin at 7:30pm. Anyone is welcome to attend our meetings free of charge.
In addition, 2016 is the 50th anniversary of the SCA's founding in 1966, and we are developing various special events and activities to celebrate this. More details will be provided on this website in due course.

Our Chinese New dinner will take place on Tuesday 16th February (18:30 for 19:00hrs) at Xanadu Restaurant, 13-14 Dalziel Place, London Road, Edinburgh EH7 5TP. Tel 0131 661-8981.
This is a social event, so please feel free to bring partners, spouses, friends and colleagues. The price is £20 per person, to include service and Chinese tea, which is payable in advance. You can download a reply slip here.

Dr Julian Ward, Senior Lecturer in Chinese at Edinburgh University, on "What Can a Qing Dynasty World Map Reveal about China and Britain?" The 19th century world map, stored in the National Archives of Scotland is of interest, firstly, for showing a cartographic representation of the newly expanded territories of Qing dynasty China; secondly, for what its back story reveals about the British presence in southern China around the time of the First Opium War.

Dan Alderson will give a talk entitled "Decoding the 推背图 (Tuibeitu) - A journey through China's past and future". The Tuibeitu is a purported Tang dynasty text made up of 60 pictures and accompanying cryptic predictions that describe key moments or turning points in Chinese history. Dan will take a light-hearted look at the text, figuring out the references in the pictures and predictions, and seeing if we can work out what the future holds for China !

This will be the Branch AGM. The business meeting will be followed by a talk by Edinburgh University Emeritus Professor Kenneth King, based on his book, China's Aid and Soft Power in Africa: The Case of Education and Training, looking at China's role in providing education and resource development for Africans in China and in Africa itself. His talk will be followed by lunch. Further details available soon.
